Terms of service
Last updated 15 October 2026
These terms are the deal between you and us when you use Flashfriend: the app on your phone, the app in your browser, and this website. By making an account, you agree to them. Our privacy policy says what we do with your data.
Who we are
Flashfriend is run by Delabere Industries, 14 Rangers Square, London, "we" or "us" on this page. You can reach us at [email protected].
Your account
- You need to be 13 or older.
- One account per person. Keep your email account safe: anyone who can read your email can sign in as you.
- You're responsible for what happens on your account. Tell us straight away if you think someone else is using it.
Plans and payments
- The trial. Your first card is free. A plan starts with a 14-day free trial of that plan, once per person. You give your payment details when you start it, and you're charged when it ends unless you cancel before then.
- Free. Without a plan, or when a plan ends, you can keep reviewing the cards you have, for free, for as long as you like. Making new cards needs a plan.
- Regular and Pro. Paid plans are subscriptions, monthly or yearly. You'll see the price before you pay. You pay through the App Store, Google Play, or our card payments provider on the web, and their terms apply to the payment too.
- What each plan includes. Regular paints up to 400 pictures in any 30 days (new cards, places and repaints all count). Pro has no 30-day limit. On every plan there are also daily fair-use limits on AI, as below.
- Renewing and cancelling. A plan renews on its own until you cancel it. Cancel any time in the store you paid through, or from Settings in the app on the web. You keep your plan until the end of the period you've paid for.
- Refunds. Refunds for App Store and Google Play purchases are handled by Apple and Google under their rules. If you buy on the web, you can change your mind within 14 days of buying: email us and we'll refund you, less the share of the plan you've already used. After that, cancelling stops the next renewal, and we don't refund the rest of a period you've started.
- Price changes. If we change a plan's price, we'll tell you before it applies to you, and you can cancel before then.
Your cards are yours
The words, pictures, memory hooks and notes in your deck are yours, including the ones our AI makes for you, and decks you import. We don't claim to own them. You let us store, copy and process them only so we can run Flashfriend for you: syncing them, showing them to you, and making the pictures and sounds you ask for. You can export your deck to Anki at any time.
Only bring in things you have the right to use. If you import a shared deck or mine words from a film, that's between you and whoever owns them.
AI can get things wrong
Pictures, memory hooks, sentences, meanings, grammar notes and audio are made by AI. They're usually right and sometimes not. Check anything that matters, and use Remake or edit a card when something's off. Don't rely on Flashfriend for anything where a mistake could hurt you, such as medical or legal translation.
Using it fairly
Please don't:
- try to make pictures or text that are illegal, hateful, sexual, or meant to harm someone
- share your account, or resell or rent Flashfriend or what it makes
- scrape it, overload it, or get around the limits on AI use
- try to break into it, or into anyone else's account
There are fair-use limits on how much AI each account can use in a day, on every plan, so Flashfriend stays affordable for everyone. They're well above what learning needs (for pictures, 100 a day). If you hit one, it resets the next day.
If you break these terms, we may limit or close your account. Unless it's serious, we'll warn you first and tell you why.
Other apps
Flashfriend works with Anki, Yomitan, asbplayer, Claude and ChatGPT. We don't run those apps, and their own terms apply when you use them. The word lists come from open data shared under CC BY-SA 4.0; the app credits each source.
If something goes wrong
We work hard to keep Flashfriend running and your deck safe, with daily backups, but we can't promise it will never be down or never lose anything. We provide it "as is".
As far as the law allows, we're not responsible for losses we couldn't reasonably have foreseen, or for business losses, and our total responsibility to you is limited to what you paid us in the 12 months before the problem. Nothing here takes away rights you have by law as a consumer, or limits our responsibility for death or injury caused by our negligence, or for fraud.
Ending things
You can stop using Flashfriend whenever you like. To delete your account and everything in it, email [email protected]. Cancel any paid plan in its store too, because deleting your account doesn't cancel a store subscription. If we ever close Flashfriend, we'll give you at least 30 days' notice so you can export your deck.
Changes to these terms
We may update these terms as Flashfriend changes. We'll update the date at the top, and for big changes, tell you in the app or by email before they apply. If you keep using Flashfriend after that, the new terms apply.
The law
These terms are under the law of England and Wales, and its courts can hear any dispute. If you live elsewhere in the UK or in the EU, you keep the protections of your own country's consumer law, and you can go to your own courts too.
