Bring your Anki deck, with its review history

Import your Anki cards with every review, so nothing starts over.

Flashfriend reads your Anki deck with its whole review history. Cards you know well stay known, cards that are due stay due, and the words you already know are used to build your new sentences.

1. Export your deck from Anki

Pick the Anki you use:

Anki on a computer

  1. In Anki, choose File › Export.
  2. Pick Anki Deck Package (.apkg), with Include scheduling information and Include media ticked.
  3. Save the file somewhere you can find it.

AnkiMobile (iPhone and iPad)

  1. Tap the gear next to your deck and choose Export.
  2. Turn on Include scheduling and Include media, then save the file to Files.

AnkiDroid

  1. Long-press your deck and choose Export.
  2. Pick Anki deck package (.apkg), with scheduling and media included, then save the file to your phone.

Keep scheduling and media turned on. Without scheduling, every card arrives as new. Without media, your pictures and audio stay behind.

2. Import it into Flashfriend

  1. If you’re setting up, choose I already use Anki. Otherwise go to Settings › Anki › Import from Anki.
  2. Choose your .apkg file.
  3. Tell Flashfriend which field holds the language you’re learning (Chinese, Japanese, Spanish or French). Japanese decks that write readings as 食[た]べる work as they are.
  4. Check how your cards will be imported. Each note type becomes one kind of Flashfriend card, and you can tap one to change it. Whatever you choose, every card keeps its reviews.
  5. Start the import. Big decks with lots of media take a little while.

When it’s done, you’ll see how many cards came in, how many words you know well and what’s due today.

Cards without pictures

Most Anki decks don’t have a picture for every word. You choose what happens to those:

  • Make pictures later: they wait in your Inbox, and you make each one when you’re ready.
  • Leave them without pictures: the meaning shows where the picture would be. You can add one any time from your Deck.

Importing again

Importing the same deck twice doesn’t make duplicates. Flashfriend recognises cards it already has.
